Neofit Rilski House Museum

The Benin House is a Revival-period building in the town of Bansko, Bulgaria. It is the birthplace of the Bulgarian Revival scholar Neofit Rilski (Nikola Benin) and was turned into a museum in 1981 under the name Neofit Rilski House Museum. It has been declared an architectural, construction, and historical cultural monument of national significance.

The building was constructed in the 18th century in the center of Bansko by the Benin family and typologically belongs to the Razlog–Chepin house. It is a two-story building with a ground floor and a residential floor, while its western part contains the fortified core typical of the Bansko house.

The museum consists of two sections — the authentically preserved house with an ethnographic exhibition, and a documentary exhibition displaying the most valuable pieces of Neofit Rilski’s rich heritage — mainly letters, photographs, and literary works.

Church “Holy Trinity”

“Holy Trinity” is an Orthodox church in the town of Bansko, Bulgaria, part of the Nevrokop Diocese of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The temple, one of the most remarkable churches in Bulgaria from the second half of the 19th century, has been declared a cultural monument. Кликни тук

The church was built in the center of Bansko by local builders in 1835, thanks to the joint efforts and generosity of the people of Bansko. The land for construction was donated by Lazar German — a wealthy resident of Bansko and the town’s mayor. The interior space is organized in Baroque style. The wood-carved and painted decorative elements are in harmony, with smooth transitions, no sharp angles, and wooden holkels with complex, curved forms.

At its main entrance, a Christian cross and a Turkish crescent can be seen side by side — a symbol of tolerance between the two religions.

Nikola Vaptsarov House-Museum

In Bansko stands the home of an exceptionally talented Bulgarian poet who dedicated his life to the struggle for peace — Nikola Yonkov Vaptsarov. The museum is housed in the building where one of the brightest and most popular Bulgarian poets of the 20th century lived with his family after 1912. It was in this very house that the poet created some of his most famous works.

The museum presents an ethnographic collection of personal belongings, photographs, stories, and memories of the poet and anti-fascist.

St. Nicholas Waterfall

The waterfall has a height of 100 m. The locals of Bansko call it “Skoko.” It was part of the natural fortification of a centuries-old settlement and an important point along the ancient road from the Aegean coast. The waterfall is located by the small dirt road between Bansko and Dobrinishte, only 8 km into the eastern part of Pirin. It is close to two attractions that draw tourists year-round — the Nameless Town and the St. Nicholas area.

Named after this area, the waterfall is situated right at the steep cliffs of St. Nicholas, accessible via a narrow, well-trodden path. It has a height of 7 m, with the lowest drop reaching no more than 5–6 m. The terrain around the waterfall allows visitors to descend safely to its base, where a small pond has formed. Two of its several cascades can even be seen from the foot of the Nameless Town, which was discovered by chance during the construction of the St. Nicholas Chapel in 2003.

Banderishka Polyana

The Bansko Ski Center has several designated zones, and the most attractive of them all is Banderishka Polyana (1635 m a.s.l.), which is at the heart of all events. The area features several restaurants, a children’s ski kindergarten, cross-country skiing tracks, a stadium, and a biathlon shooting range. The panorama is stunning — you can see the towering peaks of Vihren, Kutelo, and Cherna Mogila, as well as the “Umberto Tomba” slope, where World Cup ski and snowboard competitions are held.

From Banderishka Polyana, several lifts take skiers up to Todorka Peak at 2600 m a.s.l. Shiligarnika (1725 m a.s.l.) is another ski zone, built back in 1985 for the first international competition hosted in Bansko — the Balkan Ski Championship. The place is sheltered and surrounded by forests. It is popular for its convenient location, dining options, and the famous Todorka and Balkanida slopes. From Shiligarnika, lifts lead to The Plateau.

For intermediate skiers, the gentle slopes of The Plateau are ideal. The Plateau area offers breathtaking views of the snow-covered peaks to the east and Mount Strazhite. It also has two mountain-style restaurants and the best spot for sunbathing in winter.

Baikusheva Mura

Baikusheva Mura is located in the Pirin Mountains, near the Banderitsa Hut, which is 14 kilometers south of the town of Bansko. The tree is about 26 meters high, with a diameter of around 2.48 meters and a circumference of 7.8 meters. Mura is a type of coniferous tree. Baikusheva Mura is a black pine, and its age is estimated at more than 1,300 years. It is the oldest coniferous tree in Bulgaria and one of the oldest trees in the entire world.

It can be reached by an easy trail suitable for the whole family. A wooden platform has been built around the tree for easier access. The place is beautiful and a wonderful source of information about this type of tree. During the summer season (and not only then), you can enjoy picturesque views of the surrounding natural beauty. In the area, you can also see many species of animals characteristic of Pirin, such as wild goats, falcons, squirrels, and others.
