Bansko – Landmarks

Neofit Rilski House Museum

The Benin House is a Revival-era building in the town of Bansko, Bulgaria. It is the birthplace of the Bulgarian Revival scholar Neofit Rilski (Nikola Benin) and in 1981 was turned into a museum under the name Neofit Rilski House Museum. It has been declared an architectural, construction, and historical cultural monument of national significance.

The building was constructed in the 18th century in the center of Bansko by the Benini family and, in terms of typology, belongs to the Razlog–Chepino style house. It is a two-story structure with a ground and residential floor, and on its western side features the fortified core typical of the Bansko house.

The museum consists of two parts – the authentically preserved house with an ethnographic exhibition, and a documentary exhibition displaying the most valuable parts of Neofit Rilski’s rich legacy – mainly letters, photographs, and literary materials. Къща_музей_„Неофит_Рилски“ They preserve over 400 documentary and material artifacts. On display are the Bulgarian Grammar (1835), the unfinished Greek-Bulgarian dictionary by Neofit Rilski, books from his library, and a copy of Slavonic-Bulgarian History.

Church of the Holy Trinity

The Holy Trinity is an Orthodox church in the town of Bansko, Bulgaria, part of the Nevrokop Diocese of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The temple, one of the most remarkable churches in Bulgaria from the second half of the 19th century, has been declared a cultural monument. Кликни тук

The church was built in the center of Bansko by local builders in 1835, thanks to the joint efforts and generosity of the townspeople. The land for construction was donated by Lazar German – a wealthy local and mayor. The interior is organized in Baroque style. The wood-carved and painted decorative elements are in harmony, with smooth transitions, no sharp angles, and wooden consoles with intricate, curved shapes.

At the main entrance, a Christian cross and a Turkish crescent can be seen side by side – a symbol of tolerance between the two religions.

Nikola Vaptsarov House-Museum

In Bansko stands the home of the exceptionally talented Bulgarian poet Nikola Yonkov Vaptsarov, who dedicated his life to the fight for peace. The museum is located in the house where one of the brightest and most beloved Bulgarian poets of the 20th century lived with his family after 1912.

It was in this very house that Vaptsarov created some of his most famous poems. The museum exhibits an ethnographic collection of personal belongings, photographs, stories, and memories of the anti-fascist poet.

St. Nikola Waterfall

The waterfall, with a height of 100 m, is known locally in Bansko as “Skoko.” It was part of the natural fortification of the ancient settlement and an important point along the old trade route from the Aegean. The waterfall is located near the small dirt road between Bansko and Dobrinishte, just 8 km away, on the eastern side of the Pirin Mountains.

It is situated close to two attractions that draw visitors year-round – the Nameless Town and the St. Nikola area.

Named after this location, the waterfall lies right by the steep cliffs of the St. Nikola site. It can be reached via a well-trodden but narrow path. Its main cascade is 7 m high, with the lowest drop reaching no more than 5–6 m. The terrain around the waterfall makes it possible to descend safely to its base, where a small pond has formed.

Two of the several cascades can even be seen from the foot of the Nameless Town, which was discovered by chance during the construction of the St. Nikola chapel in 2003.

Banderishka Polyana

The Bansko Ski Center has several distinct zones, and the most attractive of them all is Banderishka Polyana (1635 m above sea level), the heart of all activities.

The area offers several restaurants, a children’s ski kindergarten, cross-country skiing trails, a stadium, and a biathlon shooting range. The panorama is breathtaking – you can see the towering peaks of Vihren, Kutelo, and Cherna Mogila, as well as the famous “Umberto Tomba” slope, where World Cup ski and snowboard competitions are held.

From Banderishka Polyana, several lifts start, taking skiers up to Todorka Peak at 2600 m above sea level.

Shiligarnika (1725 m a.s.l.) is another ski area, built back in 1985 for the first international competition hosted by Bansko – the Balkan Ski Championship. The place is sheltered and surrounded by forests, making it a preferred destination thanks to its convenient location, dining spots, and popular slopes Todorka and Balkaniada. From Shiligarnika, lifts go up to The Plateau.

The gentle slopes of The Plateau are perfect for intermediate skiers. The area also offers stunning views of the snow-covered peaks to the east and Mount Strazhite. It features two mountain-style restaurants and is one of the best spots for winter sunbathing.

The St. Nikola lift was constructed in 2003.

Baikusheva Mura

Baikusheva Mura is located in the Pirin Mountains, near the Bunderitsa hut, about 14 km south of the town of Bansko. The tree is about 26 meters tall, with a diameter of approximately 2.48 meters and a circumference of 7.8 meters. It is a type of coniferous tree.

Baikusheva Mura is a variety of Bosnian pine (black pine), and its age is estimated at more than 1300 years. It is the oldest coniferous tree in Bulgaria and one of the oldest trees in the world.

It can be reached via an easy trail suitable for the whole family. A wooden platform has been built around the tree for easier access. The site is beautiful and offers valuable information about this type of tree. During the summer season (and not only), you can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding natural beauty. In the area, you can also see many animal species characteristic of Pirin, such as wild goats, falcons, squirrels, and more.
